This little book was a journal I created of all of my favorite quotes by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who is most famous for authoring the classic, The Little Prince.
Most people in this country are not familiar with his other books, but if they were, they would appreciate that The Little Prince was a culmination of his philosophy in life. Many of the quotes I use come from these other books.
If ever there was a human voice that could speak for me, personally, it was Saint-Exupéry. He has put words to things in life I knew but could not find the words for myself.
In creating this little book of quotes, I took on the role of illustrator as a way to justify my presence on the same page with such incomparable words and ideas. Ultimately, it became a hand-bound book which I gave as a gift to someone who never understood the world inside of me. As a pilot himself who flies almost daily, he packs the book along on every trip.
I never attempted to publish What is Essential nor do I think I ever will. It seems more fitting that it is logging flight hours up in the clouds, close to Saint-Exupéry’s soul.
